Born on this day in 1948, Nell Carter was a larger than life singer and actress, who starred in the television sitcom, Gimme a Break!, and won a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway musical, Ain't Misbehavin'. She died suddenly in 2003, and was survived by her three children and domestic partner, Ann Kaser.
Carter also worked to raise money for HIV/AIDS, including performing in concert with numerous gay choruses around the country such as the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus.
